Incremental Strategy to Reform & Repeal the National Firearms Act :: 01/12/2022
U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Six months ago, this correspondent wrote an essay on Incrementalism v. “all or nothing”. It was well-received:
COVID relief funds paying for North Carolina gun "buyback" :: 01/11/2022
Gun “buybacks” (I prefer the term “compensated confiscation” instead) programs are a dumb idea in general, but at least most of the time it’s not taxpayer money being wasted.
Memphis police chief has gun stolen from car :: 01/11/2022
One of the easiest ways for criminals to get their hands on a gun is to simply steal one. No background check, no waiting period… heck, no need to pay cash. Just smash and grab.
Op-ed lashes out at "alarmists" over constitutional carry :: 01/11/2022
The gun control crowd sure does seem to like them some dead bodies, don’t they? After all, they use them as soapboxes after mass shootings. They also threaten us with tons more if we don’t do exactly what they tell us when it comes to guns. They’re not threatening to kill anyone, mind you, they’re just being alarmists.
Denver's new "ghost gun" ban comes with surprise for progressive protesters :: 01/10/2022
Denver city council members recently passed a ban on so-called “ghost guns,” hoping to distract residents into believing their elected officials are actually doing something constructive to address the rise in violent crime when in fact it’s progressive policies that are making the city less safe.
No moderate utopia :: 01/10/2022
A central theme that I often see in Idaho is to default to labels of extremism when discussing Idaho's right spectrum. It's a regular occurrence to read op-eds suggesting that Idaho's right has gone too far to the right and that what we really need is a broad center. But studies from even left-leaning organizations like Pew consistently show that it is in fact the American left that has gone off of the rails. When billions in riot damage and dozens of murders by leftist organizations like Antifa and BLM are labeled mostly peaceful and downplayed, while January 6 is labeled tantamount to Pearl Harbor or September 11, Houston, we have a problem.
Pelosi: GOP's Push for Election Integrity Is a "Legislative Continuation of January 6th" :: 01/10/2022
Well, we all saw this coming from three thousand miles away. The Democrats don't have a legislative record. They don’t have ‘Build Back Better.’ The moderate wing has most if not all their members attached to the hyper-left-wing spending bill that got its throat slit by Joe Manchin. They have nothing. They have an increasingly unpopular president who can’t create jobs. They have soaring inflation. COVID has not been shut down. The border crisis is ongoing. It’s been a long year of failure and incompetence. So, what’s left for the Democrats? Yelling about January 6.
UK Requiring Note From Doctor to Own Gun? :: 01/10/2022
The process for obtaining a firearm license in the United Kingdom is even harder and more invasive than it used to be. Last October, the Tory government issued new “statutory guidance” relating to firearm licensing and announced that “No one will be given a firearms license unless the police have reviewed information from a registered doctor setting out whether or not the applicant has any relevant medical history…” Extending beyond a medical veto on firearms licenses, the UK Home Office also announced guidance encouraging law enforcement to delve into an applicant’s social media and financial history when making license determinations.
Bureaucrats fiddle while Portland bleeds out :: 01/09/2022
Portland, Oregon was one of several U.S. cities reaching a grim milestone in 2021: a record-high number of homicides. The 90 murders in Portland was the most the city has ever seen in a 12-month period, shattering the previous record of 70 that was set back in 1987. The city’s political leadership has edged away from its “Defund the Police” mentality as the body count’s risen in recent months, but even with Mayor Ted Wheeler vowing to reconstitute (in a slightly reconfigured form) the police department’s gun violence prevention team, lengthy delays, bureaucratic snafus, and a lack of interest on the part of many officers has delayed the roll out of the specialized unit for months.
Gun rights groups fire back at USA Today hit piece :: 01/09/2022
USA Today hoped they could smear gun rights advocates by linking them to Nazis. It was a tenuous link at best, as Ranjit pointed out quite well.
Female gun ownership on the rise, femme fatales to anti-2A messaging :: 01/08/2022
Gun ownership in the United States has been on the rise the last two years in a big way. The pages of Bearing Arms has explored this more than once. Left of center pundits might peg this rise as a one-off, or perhaps try to blame the uptick in violent crime on the newly minted gun owners, but the fact of the matter is that these numbers are troubling and damming to the “hell yes we’re going to take your AR-15” crowd. After all, why would someone with a brandy new firearm, just indoctrinated into the world of firearm ownership want to give up a newfound way of life? I’m not so quixotic to think that with the millions of new firearm owners we now have millions of new advocates running balls out, but this rise in legal and responsible gun ownership is a good thing. With that comes the rise in the number of females taking up arms.
Guns right group president: 'Alarmists' are wrong. 'Permitless' concealed carry a right in Ohio :: 01/08/2022
"Criminals should pay the price for their illegal activities, not the more than 4 million law-abiding Ohioans who own and carry firearms," Dean Rieck
Los Angeles homicides hit 15-year high :: 01/08/2022
Earlier today, I noted how Chicago saw more murders than in any year since 1996. Of course, Chicago is kind of the poster child for violent crime these days, in part because of the very anti-gun sentiments expressed by lawmakers there and in the state.
Why Constitutional Carry Makes a Difference: Due to technical issues Alabama has stopped issuing Concealed Handgun Permits :: 01/08/2022
The constitutional carry bill’s most significant change is to allow people to carry a gun more quickly if need arises. Sheriff’s departments in Alabama try to issue concealed handgun permits within 30 days after someone has met the requirements. If a woman is being stalked or threatened, she may not have time to wait for a license.
A Lifesaver, Not Taker: The AR-15 as a Self-Defense Gun :: 01/07/2022
One of the most important principles of the gun-policy debate is that we do not seek or accept tactical advice from politicians or pundits. President Biden is many things, but he is not remotely qualified to tell me how to survive a violent criminal encounter. Michael Bloomberg, Rachel Maddow, David Hogg and many others are quick to tell us in various ways that we don’t need AR-15s. And they repeat that disinformation so often that it is slowly growing into an accepted narrative.
ATF's New Unfinished Gun Receiver Rule Is On Hold as ATF Seeks Answers :: 01/07/2022
WASHINGTON, D.C. –-(Ammoland.com)- The industry and the public have been anxiously awaiting the new Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) rule on unfinished frames and receivers. We now have an idea where the ATF might be in the process, thanks to emails from the ATF’s Office of Regulatory Affairs obtained by Gun Owners of America (GOA).
Constitutional Carry bill gets big boost in Alabama :: 01/07/2022
The legislative fight over permitless carry in Alabama is going to be awfully contentious for a state dominated by the Republican party, thanks in large part to the objections by some in law enforcement, but the odds of passage appear to be pretty good this year after the state’s House GOP caucus included Constitutional Carry in its list of legislative priorities this week.
Don’t Look Now, But After Two Years of Upheaval, the Culture is Changing...In Favor of Individual Gun Rights :: 01/07/2022
Over time, we’ve seen changes in focus by the hoplophobic elements of society. Originally, it was all about banning handguns or at least “Handgun Control Inc.” The “assault weapon,” that is, the AR ban of 1994-2004 followed, with no discernible effect on crime, homicide, etc. Movement mutation continued, with groups dropping wording advocating bans, and moving to claims of fighting pure “violence” and promoting gun “safety.”
ATN Becomes the Latest Firearms Industry Firm to Abandon California for a Better Business Climate :: 01/06/2022
What’s the fastest growing business in California? We don’t know for sure, but if we had to guess, we’d say U-Haul franchises and moving companies. The latest gun industry firm to see the value of being located somewhere other than the formerly Golden State is American Technology Network.
Constitutional Carry bill heads to Indiana House floor :: 01/06/2022
While a Constitutional Carry bill failed to make it out of the Indiana Senate last year, gun owners in the Hoosier state haven’t given up on their push to remove the licensing mandate for those who want to carry a concealed firearm for self-defense. And in the early days of the 2022 legislative session, the idea appears to be a high priority for a number of Republican lawmakers, who sent the bill to the House floor after a key committee vote on Wednesday.
