Gun industry declares Biden salesman of the year :: 01/12/2022

President Joe Biden’s previous stint in the executive branch of government was as vice president. His boss at the time, President Barack Obama, was such a voracious anti-Second Amendment type that he drove gun sales at a record-setting pace. For eight straight years, he was the best gun salesman the firearm industry has ever seen.

That’s definitely a part of Obama’s legacy that Biden has fully embraced, as the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Larry Keane has detailed.

It turns out President Joe Biden is seeing more guns being sold in his first year than his two White House predecessors. For all his intent to hobble the firearm industry and clamp down on lawful gun ownership, gun sales have been good. Really good. December’s NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS) figures for 2021 put the annual total over 18.5 million. That’s higher than any year that President Barack Obama was in the White House

Presidential Gun Sales

Law-abiding Americans purchased firearms in substantial numbers to finish out 2021. NSSF-adjusted NICS totals for December came in at nearly 1.8 million. That’s good for the second-highest December total, only 6 percent lower than 2020’s record final month. That figure also brings the total adjusted number to 18.5 million background checks for a gun sale. NSSF adjusts the total NICS numbers released by FBI to reflect only those background checks associated with the sale or transfer of a firearm.

The FBI’s unadjusted December 2021 total for NICS background checks landed just north of 3 million at 3,080,295. The December total means that over the 12-month span of President Biden’s first year in office, 38,858,429 NICS checks were run for law-abiding Americans, nearly dead even with the total for first-year NICS checks for former Republican President Donald Trump and former Democratic President Barack Obama, combined. That total was 39 million.

The most antigun presidential ticket ever has yielded the greatest gun sales first-year presidential term ever. It’s no surprise gun control groups are feeling disheartened.

Indeed.

See, one of the downsides of talking about gun control is that pro-gun folks will believe you when you say you want it. We see no reason to really lie about it, so when you talk about banning the sale of something or even just making it harder to buy a firearm, we listen.

We listen and we buy.

After all, if you’re going to ban the sale of certain weapons, then it just makes sense to go ahead and get it while it’s legal.

Biden’s anti-Second Amendment push creates a sense of urgency that didn’t exist under his predecessors. Yeah, Obama was anti-gun, but he said during his campaign that while he’d like gun control, he didn’t see it happen. After he was in office, he had an adversarial Congress for much of that time. There wasn’t really a threat.

But Joe Biden ran on a gun control agenda. He made it clear he wanted gun control to happen and he was looking at a Congress that was more than willing to make that happen.

So, as a result, people are flocking to the gun store.

To be fair, it’s not all about Biden’s anti-gun push. That’s part of it, but there are other factors. Economic concerns, a soaring violent crime rate, a pandemic, concerns about future civil unrest, all spin together to create a vortex of reasons someone may want a gun that has nothing to do with how anti-gun the president is.

Couple Biden’s stance on the issue, though, and you get a perfect storm that more than covers any issues the firearm industry may have had over the past four years.

Frankly, if Biden wanted to help the firearm industry, I can’t think of a single thing he could do differently that would work better.
