Putting Gun-Control to the Test :: 10/11/2019

We all want to protect our family and friends. Gun-Control is the theory that disarming honest people will stop criminals. That is a fantastic theory, but does gun-control work in practice? Now that we have new FBI data at hand, we don’t have to guess if gun-control reduces violent crime. The answers might surprise you as we look from coast to coast. Does gun control save lives or cost them?

Widespread Ignorance: Americans Wrongly Believe Most Gun Deaths in US Are Homicides and Mass Shootings :: 10/11/2019

On some level, can you blame average people for getting the facts so wrong?  In light of the news media's ugly blend of profound bias and almost proud ignorance on gun issues, it's entirely unsurprising that the public is deeply misinformed on the subject.  The latest case in point is a fresh survey in which Americans badly miss the mark in estimating the top causes of gun-related deaths.  Voters vastly overestimate the prevalence and toll of homicides and (especially) mass shootings, while sharply underestimating suicides.  Via the Free Beacon, compare and contrast perception...

To the Editor, Psychiatric News: I read with interest Dr. Gold’s August 28 Psychiatric News article “Gun Violence and Mental Illness: It’s Time to Change the Status Quo”. Meeting With NY Congressman Illustrates Futility Of Gun Debate :: 10/10/2019

When you think of the New York members of Congress that are likely to drive you nuts, Congressman Antonio Delgado isn’t one of the first names you’re likely to think of. Representing the 19th District of that state, which incorporates a fair bit of rural New York, Delgado doesn’t open his mouth a whole lot about guns, apparently.

But. . .I Was Told Gun Control Worked, So How Is This Possible? :: 10/09/2019

I have it on good authority that gun control works. I’ve been told over and over by gun control advocates that anti-gun policies are the only sane response to so-called “gun crime.” Trying to focus on the criminals themselves is apparently a fool’s errand or something. We should instead take away people’s guns so only the biggest and strongest of people can be safe.

Nevada Towns May Change Domestic Violence Ordinance Due To 2A :: 10/09/2019

Domestic violence is a serious offense pretty much everywhere in the country. In fairness, it probably should be. There’s something very, very wrong with the kind of person who beats up their romantic partner, regardless of the sex of anyone involved. It’s a deep violation of trust and it creates serious problems for the abused.

Why it is critically important to call it 'liberty control' instead of 'gun control' :: 10/09/2019

Socialism is growing in popularity in America. If you’re a regular reader of NOQ Report, chances are you’re a conservative who scratches your head any time you hear statistics pointing to the rise of Marxist principles as acceptable to Americans, particularly the youth in our country. But we need only look to the two most influential forces propagating ideologies to realize what the source is of all this lunacy.

Connecticut Gun Theft Victim Gets Rest Of His Guns Taken By Police :: 10/08/2019

One thing lawmakers should consider when they pass a law isn’t just how it will be enforced but also how that enforcement will sway people’s behavior. For example, the idea behind the death penalty is, in part, that executing people will dissuade others from committing such heinous crimes. That’s the goal.

The journal Health Affairs has dedicated its October issue to the issue of gun control, so you’ll be seeing a lot of news about different new studies showing why we need more gun laws on the books over the next few days. Over at Newsweek, writer Asher Stockler has a write up of a University of Michigan study on gun-death rates and claims that the study shows, “that only two states, California and New York, and the District of Columbia saw firearm mortality rates decline in recent years. This is notable considering these jurisdictions’ relatively strict gun laws.”

The U.K. Must Ban Pointy Knives, Says Church of England :: 10/08/2019

Despite a host of legal restrictions on firearms and knives, not to mention a society that increasingly resembles a panopticon in the thoroughness of the surveillance to which it's subjected, the U.K.'s crime rates remain stubbornly resistant to reduction. Last year, London's murder rate briefly overtook that of New York City—a feat likely to be repeated as crime continues its decline in the U.S.—and the latest U.K. figures show an increase in violent crimes committed with both guns and knives.
