As of January 1, 2024, a new law goes into effect that will directly punish Illinois gun owners for exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. The new law is called the “Protect Illinois Communities Act” (PICA). The law prohibits the ownership, sale, and purchase of various semiautomatic centerfire firearms with certain features. Not only does PICA ban the transfer of certain Firearms and magazines, but it also includes mandatory registration of all newly banned equipment.
What exactly does that mean? It means the semi-automatic rifle you’ve had for years and enjoyed legally has now been deemed illegal and dangerous to society by politicians.
As a result, you are a criminal for owning it, and you must turn yourself in by giving a list of your newly illegal firearms to the Illinois government. What happens next, we question.
Not only is the new Illinois gun ban a violation of Illinoisan’s 2nd Amendment rights, but it also blatantly attacks their 5th Amendment rights by requiring gun owners to participate in this State-run gun registry.
The 5th Amendment clearly states, “nor shall any person be subject for the same offense, to be twice put in jeopardy of life, or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”
The forced registration component of this new law brings with it the fear of self-incrimination for many gun owners across Illinois. What if there was a product that would take your AR out of the “assault weapons” category?
The brilliant minds at a company called Kali Key have created a product that transforms the AR into a manually operated bolt action rifle without requiring any permanent modifications. How does it work? The Kali Key simply replaces your semi-auto BCG, potentially removing your AR from the “assault weapon” category altogether. All state gun laws are written differently, but this product is starting to turn some heads and may answer the blue state semi-auto tyranny many are experiencing. Although removing the semi-auto capability may not be your first choice, it is fully reversible and could be a valid option while Attorneys fight to restore the 2nd Amendment in several States across America.
Attorney David Sigale, who wrote an opinion on Kali Key, identified four primary benefits of the Kali Key in the State of Illinois:
One of Kali Key’s goals is to use sales to directly support grassroots 2A organizations like San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO), which works closely with FPC, CalGuns, and Gun Owners of California (GOC). Direct collaboration has, in small part, funded several 2A lawsuits and victories like Miller v Bonta (the California “AW” ban suit) and Duncan v Bonta (the California standard capacity magazine suit). Kali Key is also working with Gun Owners of America.
Attorney David Sigale said, “I believe that the Kali Key, when installed in an otherwise prohibited AR platform prior to bringing the firearm into the State, and when done in a permanent (as possible) manner, removes the firearm from the category of “assault weapon” under Illinois law. This means the firearm can be both possessed in Illinois, and possessed without registration.”
The folks at Kali Key recognize that this product may only be a placeholder until semi-automatic rifle bans can be defeated in blue states. Shea McQuestion, a Kali Key Representative even said, “We recognize that with every court victory we help fund, we are one step closer to making the Kali Key obsolete.”
