A homeowner fatally shot an intruder early Saturday in Browns Point, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner identified the dead man as Viktor Starovevrov, 28, of Tacoma.
The shooting occurred in the 5100 block of Ninth Avenue Northeast, a residential street lined with duplexes.
Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said the homeowner heard a noise on his porch around 3:30 a.m. When he went to investigate, the suspect forced his way into the home.
“He had a physical confrontation with the homeowner, who was armed,” Troyer said. “The homeowner fired one round, striking the suspected burglar and killing him.”
The sheriff’s office is getting a warrant to process the scene and examine the body, Troyer said. The homeowner is cooperating with authorities.
No unaccounted-for vehicles were found in the area, Troyer said.
Investigators cordoned off two houses with crime-scene tape.
The home where the shooting occurred was occupied by a 44-year-old man, 32-year-old woman and a 3-year-old girl, who slept through the incident. The home’s yard has children’s toys and playground equipment, and abuts state Route 509.
Troyer said the shot hit the suspect and went across the street and possibly into a vehicle parked in another home’s driveway. That’s why two homes are taped off.
