UPDATE - March 15, 2021: A man was justified in shooting his son-in-law to death last week, according to Lee County Commonwealth's Attorney H. Fuller Cridlin.
Officials said 47-year-old Kevin Corbin assaulted a family member last week. Although the incident wasn't reported to police, the family member reported the incident to their family and took photographs of the injuries.
Following this, the family member moved into their father's home. Corbin then traveled to the home on the morning March 10, but was denied entry into the home and made threatening comments.
According to authorities, Corbin returned to the home intoxicated that evening with a knife. He then attempted to break down the door and said he would kill everyone in the home and himself.
The investigation found the family member was trying to keep Corbin out of the home and the father retrieved a gun. Corbin forced his way inside and tried to pull the family member outside. The father fired a warning shot and told Corbin he would shoot him if he persisted. Corbin ignored the warning and continued the attempted break-in and assault.
The father then shot and killed Corbin. The incident was reported to police and the father cooperated fully with the investigation.
Corbin had a violent criminal history, including a murder conviction from 1992. The father has no criminal convictions of any kind.
The father's deadly force was justified, per Virginia law, according to Cridlin, and the case has been closed.
