Texas Self-Defense: Texas mall shooting leaves one dead, multiple injured :: 01/23/2017

A shooting at a Texas mall left one person dead and three wounded after a botched robbery, police said.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said two suspects tried robbing a Kay Jewelers store at Rolling Oaks Mall around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The suspects fled through the mall and came across two men who tried to intervene. One of the robbers opened fire and fatally shot one of the men. The second man had a concealed carry license and returned fire at the suspect, wounding him, McManus said.

“It’s absolutely senseless,” the chief said. “This is the second time that a good Samaritan was killed trying to intervene in a crime to help the victim.”

“What we have here is a robbery gone really, really bad,” McManus added.

The second robber ran off through the mall, firing his gun, and injuring a third man and a woman. He was apprehended after crashing a stolen vehicle about eight miles southeast in Converse late Sunday. He was paraded out of the San Antonio police headquarters in a white, hooded jumpsuit.

The first suspect was critically wounded and hospitalized, police said.

Both suspects face aggravated assault and capital murder charges in the fatal heist, cops said.

The city's fire chief, Charles Hood, said the injured robber and the two victims were taken to local hospitals. Two women — one who complained of chest pains and a pregnant woman who had labor pains — were also hospitalized.

Mayor Ivy Taylor called the shooting a "tragedy.”

McManus said the good Samaritans are in their mid to late 30s. Police have not released the ages or conditions of the victims.

Footage from news stations showed a heavy police presence and emergency responders surrounding the mall.

McManus said the mall was on lockdown while police searched for the second robber. He added that the shoppers who took cover were all safe.

Maggie Hernandez told MySA.com that she and her 18-year-old daughter were at the mall when they heard the shooting.

“It was scary,” the daughter said.

They both managed to escape along with a group of store employees behind a car outside.

Other law enforcement, including the FBI, are assisting in the investigation.
