Texas Self-Defense: Police closing busy Killeen intersection after shooting :: 01/18/2022

UPDATE, 2:42 p.m.:  “On Tuesday, January 18, 2022, just shortly after 10:00 a.m, officers attempted to make contact with suspect that had been involved in several violent crimes in the city,” Killeen Police Department spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez said Tuesday afternoon. “That is when the suspect fled in a vehicle and a pursuit ensued. He led officers eastbound on Veteran’s Memorial Blvd towards Harker Heights, Nolanville and onto I-14.”

Miramontez said the suspect was originally driving towards Belton and Loop 121 before he started driving westbound on Interstate 14.

“As the suspect approached Central Texas Expressway and Rosewood Drive, he wrecked out disabling his vehicle,” she said. “He then fled from his vehicle and attempted to hijack a vehicle driving by. When the driver of that vehicle noticed the armed suspect, he took out his firearm and discharged it at the suspect, protecting himself.”

UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.: Killeen police are now calling the incident a "Shooting Investigation" rather than a "Homicide Investigation." Killeen Police Chief Charles Kimble told local TV station KWTX that the person shot was wanted in a string of robberies, and was shot when he tried to carjack another car at the intersection following a police chase. The injured suspect has been taken to a hospital, Kimble said.

Following a shooting this morning, Killeen and Harker Heights police were closing up the intersection at Rosewood and Central Texas Expressway, which is the access road to Interstate 14, at about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

"Officers are currently working a shooting investigating at the intersection of Central Texas Expressway and Rosewood Drive," Killeen Police Department said on Facebook this morning. "The scene is active and we ask motorists to avoid the area and find alternate routes. We will update this post as soon as officers have cleared the area."

An image attached to the KPD Facebook post had the words "Homicide Investigation."

A call to Killeen police for more information was not immediately returned.
