A 61 year old woman in Terrell, TX awoke to a noise she thought at first was her cat. But after hearing the sound of men’s voices, she realized someone was breaking into her home.
“I called out, ‘What are are you doing in my home,’” she told a local news station.
The woman, identified only as Sharon to protect her anonymity, grabbed her gun and unloaded it on the two men.
“He must of heard me clicking it because that’s when he came back and beat me up really bad,” said the woman.
After hitting one of her intruders in the gut, Sharon ran out of bullets. That’s when she says the other man ran down the hall and beat her severely, stealing her gun. Suffering from a concussion and multiple cuts and bruises on her face, Sharon is lucky to be alive.
Police found Saul Guzman, 21, being treated for a gunshot wound to the stomach at Texas Regional Medical Center at Sunnyvale. His accomplice, Pedro Guzman, 21, wasn’t far away. Police picked him up when they spotted him sitting in his car at a gas station across the street from the hospital.
Even as their investigation began, police immediately found evidence that this wasn’t the first time these two have attempted robbery.
“We do believe they may be responsible for other offenses in our city,” said Terrell Police Captain A.D. Sansom.
Both suspects have been charged with Burglary of Habitation, Intend other Felony Theft or Assault, Theft of Firearm and Burglary of Vehicle.
As for the homeowner? She plans on installing a security system and buying another gun. She also has a word of advice for other women:
“I hope other women will take note,” she said. “I am glad I was able to defend myself.”
And so are we.
