A woman shot a teenager dead at a Nashville gas station on Wednesday evening in self-defense after he attempted to rob her, police believe.
Mykal Prime, 19, was shot and killed in the lot of a Marathon gas station on John A. Merritt Boulevard around 8:30 p.m.
He went to the market, police have said, allegedly to buy marijuana from the woman who eventually shot him.
A 25-year-old woman interviewed by police said Prime got in to the front seat of her car while she was parked at the gas pump.
A friend of Prime's confirmed he had been dropped off at the location to buy marijuana, and the woman admitted to police later that she was the seller he planned to meet.
He allegedly pulled out a gun and attempted to rob her, and hit her with a gun, at which point a struggle ensued and she was able to push him out of the car.
As he was exiting, she pulled out her own gun and shot him once, police said.
Prime collapsed in the parking lot and died at the scene. First responders reported finding a pistol under his body.
Later on Wednesday, around 11:30 p.m., the woman walked into Centennial Medical Center claiming to have been "pistol-whipped" during a robbery, which is where police came into contact with her.
She told detectives that after the shooting she was scared and drove to her apartment before changing her mind and seeking medical attention for the head injuries.
The woman has not been charged in connection with the shooting.
Early reports Wednesday evening tied the shooting to nearby Tennessee State University, but although the crime scene is in walking distance of the university, the location is not part of campus and no connection to the school has been released by police.
