The incident happened on Gentry Street in Spartanburg
A trail of blood led police officers behind a Spartanburg home, where they found a burglary suspect with multiple gunshot wounds Thursday morning, Spartanburg police Maj. Art Littlejohn said.
Officers were dispatched to Gentry Street about a woman shooting a man, Littlejohn said.
Officers said when they arrived at the residence, a woman was crying on the front porch and another woman was holding a 9 mm handgun, Littlejohn said.
One woman said she was in her bedroom on the phone with the door shut while everyone was asleep. The woman said she saw a black figure open the door, peep in and shut the door when he saw her, according to an incident report.
The other woman jumped up to help when she heard the woman on the phone screaming and telling the man to get out, the incident report said.
The woman who was on the phone when the man came in her room grabbed a gun and shot at the man while he was running out of the house, the report said.
The women then went to check to see if their children, who were sleeping, were safe, the report said.
When they went back outside, the man was gone, the report said.
Officers and a K-9 unit soon found Samuel Jeter, 43, from Spartanburg, after following a trail of blood in the backyard and said he had four gunshot wounds to his buttocks, the report said.
Officers said Jeter was unresponsive when he was found, but later became alert after emergency medical services personnel arrived and started treating him.
Jeter was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries before being taken to the Spartanburg County Detention Center, Littlejohn said.
Jeter was charged with first-degree burglary, Littlejohn said.
