Oregon Self-Defense: 17-year-old shoots two males breaking into his mobile home :: 09/03/2019

MEDFORD, Ore. - West Medford residents are sharing their concerns for safety, after a double shooting happened at a mobile home early Monday morning.

Medford Police Department report the incident happened along the 1500 block of S. Peach St. at about 1:50 A.M. When officers arrived at the scene, they found two males suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police said the 17-year-old shooter came home from a dispute with a 15-year-old acquaintance. After the 15-year-old and his 22-year-old brother forced entry into the subject's mobile home, officers said he shot both of them with a 30-30 rifle.

With recent shootings around the region and across the country, those in the area said they were not surprised to hear about this latest incident.

"Initially, it was not really too much of a shock," Medford resident Marcus Jackson said. "West Medford lately has been kind of known for shootings. Somehow, somewhere, all of a sudden, but you know it is crazy that it's teenagers. "

Officers said the 15-year-old sustained non-life threatening injuries, while his older brother was left in critical condition from the incident.

Since the brothers were breaking into the subject's home, some residents argue this was a clear case of self-defense.

"I think the kid had every right to protect himself," Jackson said. "They're trying to get into his house and so I believe he's doing the right thing. But then again, I don't know exactly about the gun."

While the Medford Police Department said this incident was not gang-related, they do confirm that alcohol is a factor in this case. Officers report there have been no current charges to anyone involved, but the case still remains under investigation.
