Ohio Self-Defense: Three shots heard when off-duty police officer shoots home intruder in Lakewood :: 04/13/2017

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Cleveland Metroparks ranger Matt Shearn called Lakewood police Wednesday morning saying he shot someone after they broke into his home, according to a 911 call.

Shearn was not hurt during the break-in that happened just before 7 a.m. on Grace Avenue south of Detroit Avenue, Lakewood police Capt. Ed Hassing said.

A neighbor told a 911 dispatcher that she heard three gun shots as she sat in her home office, according to the recording.

She couldn't see anything, but just heard a "bang, bang, bang."

Shearn reported that everyone in the home was fine, but did look around to make sure no one else was inside, according to the 911 call.

Shearn wasn't sure whether his shots actually struck the intruder.

The intruder was caught several blocks away with a gunshot wound in the shoulder. The intruder was taken to MetroHealth where it was reported the injury is not considered life threatening, Hassing said.

He has not been formally charged.

It is not clear whether the intruder was shot in or outside the home.
