A father and son were leaving for work Friday morning when two strangers walked up to their door, asked for directions, and then forced their way into the house and tried to rob them.
Two people were shot, including the homeowner.
This violent home invasion happened in a quiet community off Highway 207 in Chesterfield County, near the North Carolina state line. The man and his son told deputies that two masked men asked for directions to Charlotte, then pulled guns.
“They were coming out of their house, going to work when two guys approached them, and forced them back into their house,” said Captain Wayne Jordan of the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office.
Once inside the home, deputies said the two suspects demanded to get into a gun safe. One fired a shot at the homeowner, hitting him in the leg. The homeowner’s 18-year-old son fired too, hitting one of the suspects.
The suspect who had been shot was flown to a Charlotte hospital where he died. The other suspect ran, got into a car waiting down the road, and was later caught in Union County. Union County deputies also found the white car with a partially black roof that was seen near the house.
Chesterfield County sheriff’s deputies said the suspect who was shot was 17, and his name has not been released.
21-year-old Noah Daniels of Marshville is charged with two counts of attempted murder and burglary.
A 17-year-old girl is also charged as accessory after the fact. Deputies are still looking for 23-year-old Austin Drake. He was a passenger in the car at the time of the home invasion, deputies said.
Drake has a history with this same house, deputies said. Captain Jordan said he broke into the same home back in December and was shot at the time. He’s out of jail on bond awaiting trial in that case.
This time, deputies said he was with the other suspects, but did not go into the house.
Channel 9 did speak to the homeowner who was shot. He did not give his name, but said he’d never seen the two suspects who invaded his home before. He was released from the hospital Friday morning after his leg was treated.
