LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -- Las Vegas Metropolitan police said a suspect was shot while trying to break into a home in the west valley on Wednesday.
According to police, officers were called to the 9300 block of West Desert Inn, near South Fort Apache Road, around 2:33 p.m. on August 7.
The shooting happened at the Regency at the Lakes apartment complex. Andrea, a woman who lives at the apartments and didn't want to give her last name, said the suspected intruders robbed her place first.
"The detectives asked me to just see what was missing, and I did notice a few things that weren’t there anymore," she said.
Despite only living in the apartment with her family for about a month, she said her downstairs neighbor took notice of the intruders.
"Our downstairs neighbor heard the commotion, and he knows that we’re not there during the day," Andrea said.
She said her neighbor called the cops and armed himself. The suspected thieves then forced their way into his apartment downstairs.
Las Vegas police said one of the three suspects was shot by the homeowner after breaking open the door. He was was taken to University Medical Center Trauma for treatment, and is expected to survive.
Neighbors said the complex has had issues with crime.
"After I got broken into, talked to a lot of the neighbors and found out that other people around me had been getting broken into," said neighbor Jennifer Elder.
Elder added that her place was broken into in November 2018.
"They kind of trashed some stuff, stole a few items," she said. "My mom’s wedding ring is one I wish I could get back."
Another neighbor, Ernst Thesee, said, "For me it’s heartbreaking, because you know I mean it’s not safe. It’s close by."
Detectives with LVMPD were still working to identify the other two suspects.
Anyone with any information was urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
