KALAMAZOO, MI -- An employee at Bronco Liquor shot a man attempting to rob the store at gunpoint Thursday, Dec. 5. The suspected robber sustained non-life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound to the arm, Kalamazoo County Sheriff Undersheriff Jim VanDyken said.
Employees of a neighboring business reported hearing gunshots and hysterics inside the liquor store before calling 911.
The sheriff’s department, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and Western Michigan University Police responded to the store, located near the corner of West KL Avenue and South Drake Road, at about 12:49 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
An employee of the liquor store used a handgun to stop the robber, VanDyken said. The employee’s actions will be reviewed by the prosecutor, he said.
The suspect fled on foot with an unknown amount of cash, and was later found and arrested by officers searching the area around Nottingham Place Apartments directly behind the store, VanDyken said. Cash was recovered from the suspect, according to the release.
Police dogs assisted in the effort, searching the surrounding area for further evidence.
The suspect, whose name had not been released, is now in custody and is expected to be arraigned Friday on charges related to the incident, VanDyken said.
The man arrested is the only suspect in the alleged robbery, the undersheriff said. Police previously reported there were three suspects, but have since corrected that statement.
