A LaPlace homeowner fatally shot a man who broke into his house on Tuesday night, authorities said.
Kalvin Ferrygood, a 27-year-old man from Garyville, died at a hospital in New Orleans after he was shot in the abdomen while barging into a home in the 3000 block of Cambridge Drive, the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.
According to Sheriff Mike Tregre, the homeowner — whose name wasn't released — heard voices in his backyard and opened his rear door about 8 p.m. Ferrygood then entered the house, and the homeowner gunned him down with a .40-caliber pistol in self-defense, Tregre said.
Sheriff's Office deputies and local firefighters gave first aid to Ferrygood, and paramedics then took him to a hospital in the city for treatment. However, he was pronounced dead after arriving, the Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies did not arrest the homeowner after taking statements from him and another witness as well as reviewing physical and video evidence, the Sheriff's Office said. The Sheriff's Office did not say whether the other witness also lived at the home.
Tregre said his investigators are trying to identify who else might have been speaking to the suspect before the shooting took place. They are also probing whether they can link Ferrygood to any other unsolved break-ins in the area, Tregre said.
Tregre said investigators would forward their case to local prosecutors and let them determine whether they agree with the decision to not arrest the homeowner.
