An early morning shooting near Slidell that left one man dead happened when a convicted felon shot at two men who were trying to take his child, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.
The dead man was identified by Coroner Dr. Charles Preston as 34-year-old Calvin Jackson of Marrero. The cause of death was a gunshot wound, Preston said.
Hakim Dumas, 40, had argued with his live-in girlfriend just after 1 a.m. Thursday, according to a Sheriff's Office news release. She left for a family member's home but left her sleeping child behind.
Two hours later, Dumas was confronted at the door of his house on Kings Row by two men who were there to get the child, the Sheriff's Office said.
One of the men was armed. Dumas fired his own weapon at the men, fatally wounding one and causing a graze wound to the other. The injured man, Billy Porche of Harvey, fled but was found by deputies shortly thereafter.
Investigators learned that neither man had permission to remove the child, according to the news release.
Porche was arrested and booked on attempted aggravated kidnapping of a child and second-degree murder because his actions resulted in the death of the other man, the Sheriff's Office said.
The office said investigators determined that Dumas acted in self-defense, and he has not been charged in connection with the homicide. However, he was booked on two felony counts: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession or dealing in firearms with an obliterated number.
Four suspects have been charged with murder in Slidell's first homicide this year, according to the Slidell Police Department.
