RIGBY, Idaho (KIFI/KIDK) - A home invasion is scary enough in itself, and it's taken to another level when shots are fired.
William L. Shinkle is accused of entering a Rigby home Thursday morning. He was confronted by the homeowner and the homeowner's son. Shinkle shot at them. The son then grabbed a shotgun and fired back, hitting Shinkle in the stomach.
Bobby Packard and his son, Brian, are doing fine Friday. They are grateful to be alive after having so many shots fired at them inside their own house.
"He really stepped up and saved us. You know, I couldn't be prouder of him," said Bobby. "I really thought me and my dad were gonna die," said Brian.
Jefferson County sheriff's deputies responded to a gunshot wound call early Thursday morning, but Bobby and Brian weren't the ones hit -- the home invader, suspect Shinkle, was, after prying his way into the Packard's home. Brian woke up and Bobby came home, noticing the garage door wide open.
They then went into Bobby's bedroom -- where Shinkle was -- and Shinkle fired without warning.
"Well, there was a guy that came in with a pry bar and he pried the garage door open and he came in and kicked my dad's door open after he searched through the room right next to my dad's," Brian said.
Brian says what he did was all in self-defense.
"The guy started shooting, he shot like twice and then I ran and got the shotgun and loaded a bullet in it. I didn't think I was gonna have to shoot him, but he shot three more times at me and I had to shoot him," explained Brian.
Jefferson County deputies found Shinkle outside the house with a gunshot wound to in the stomach. He was then taken to the hospital. Bobby and Brian were not hurt.
"It was a scary deal. You know, I can't believe that we didn't get hit by the six shots," said Bobby.
Bobby and Brian usually feel very safe in their neighborhood. They do not know who Shinkle is or why he targeted the house. Shinkle is still in the hospital; charges against him are pending. Deputies are still investigating.
