NORTHEAST COBB, GA -- A social gathering at a Cobb County apartment ended in gunfire and the death of a man, Marietta police said. Police responded to a shots fired call in the 700 block of Franklin Road, close to 3 a.m. Friday.
A woman told officers that she shot a man who was trying to force his way into her apartment. Witnesses corroborated her version of events, telling investigators that the man and two women were asked to leave the gathering an hour before the commotion began.
Once the trio left the premises, the man returned, only this time he was belligerent and demanded to be let back inside the gathering, witnesses told authorities.
"They stated he began kicking the door and making verbal threats toward everyone inside, and that when they opened the door the male abruptly reached for his waistband as though he was drawing a firearm," Marietta police said in a news release.
That's when a woman inside the apartment pulled out a gun and opened fire on the man, striking him several times. He was rushed to Kennestone Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
"After reviewing the facts and witness statements with the District Attorney’s Office, the incident appears to be an act of self-defense. No charges are being filed at this time," police said.
