At least four police officers have been killed after an attack on the Paris Police Department headquarters Thursday afternoon, according to the Daily Mail UK. The knifeman is "believed to be a civilian police worker." The unnamed suspect was shot dead by authorities.
Initial reports suggest that two of the deceased are women, and it is unclear how many injuries have been sustained. The attack occurred right across the street from Notre Dame Cathedral. A source told local media that the attacker had been working there for 20 years in an administrative role. Authorities are blaming a work place disturbance as the motive behind the knifings. The incident occurred around 1:00 pm local time. The surrounding area has been blocked off to bystanders, though it appears the situation is under control.
"Another colleague is in a state of shock (...) and the person behind the attack has been shot by another colleague," Police union official Loic Travers told local media.
It is the worst attack on French police in recent memory.
