SARASOTA COUNTY -- A Pizza Hut employee shot a man who attempted to rob the store Tuesday night, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office reports.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, two masked men attempted to rob the Pizza Hut at 3251 17th St. at about 11:30 p.m. One of the employees reported that he drew his lawfully carried firearm after one of the robbers pointed a gun at him. The 22-year-old employee, who said he feared for his life, fired three times at the robber before taking cover. The robbers fled, leaving a firearm and blood behind.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a gunshot victim being driven to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Shawnathan Young, 21, of Bradenton was treated for a gunshot wound and charged with armed robbery. The three men who were in the car that brought Young to the hospital were arrested.
The three men, driver David Welch, 18, of Sarasota, Henry Morley, 20, of Sarasota and Deshawn Reid, 23, of Sarasota, are charged with armed robbery. Each admitted to being involved in the crime, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Young does not have a booking photo because he is in the hospital, the Sheriff’s Office says.
The case remains under investigation.
