The attempted burglary and shooting was reported Tuesday morning at 36 NE 42nd St.
Miami police said the homeowner's alarm notified him that someone was breaking in, and he went outside and found the culprit holding bolt cutters.
Police said a confrontation ensued and the homeowner shot the intruder in the abdominal area.
The would-be burglar, identified as Dennis Harris, 47, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he underwent surgery.
Neighbors told Local 10 News reporter Derek Shore that numerous burglaries have been reported in the area, and one couple recently moved out after their home was burglarized for the second time.
"I'm glad," neighbor Rachel Straub said. "I think the people should be stopped."
A woman who lives on the block said people have tried to break into her home four times, and an attempted burglary was reported at the latest victim's home just a few weeks ago.
"I can't blame the guy," neighbor Jeff Jernigan said.
Harris is recuperating from surgery and is expected to be charged in the attempted burglary.
