Canada isn’t really like the United States, though there are a ton of superficial similarities. One similarity, though, is that most of the gun violence problem really stems from a handful of groups in their cities. You know, gangs.
The problem probably filtered up from the United States at some point and then spread like a virus throughout the provinces, but now it’s an issue. While Canada’s violent crime rate is far lower than ours–they’re apparently way too polite for it to get really out of hand–it’s still a problem that Canadians want addressed.
However, it looks like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will spend more money disarming hunters than actually addressing gangs.
The Trudeau government is looking to spend double buying back guns from legal gun owners than they have promised to spend fighting guns and gangs.
…
The shootings plaguing cities across the country overwhelmingly involve illegal handguns smuggled in from the United States. Earlier this year the federal government promised $327 million over five years including $86 million for the Canada Border Services Agency and the RCMP to stop illegal guns entering the country.
…
Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said during the election that the government plans to outlaw a number of guns and buy back as many as 250,000 rifles from licensed gun owners at a cost of $600 million.
Think about that, we have a problem with illegally smuggled handguns being used to commit crimes and the government will spend near double buying back legal guns than they will spend on dealing with crime guns.
Yeah, I agree, it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
However, there are a few facts to keep in mind. First and foremost, it’s difficult to catch guns at the border without checking every single vehicle. Oh, it can be done, of course. It regularly is, actually. Yet a lot more make it through.
As a result of that, it’s expected that there won’t be a whole lot to show for it no matter how much money gets thrown at the problem.
But buying back so-called military-style guns from law-abiding citizens? Oh, now that will make headlines, and that’s really what this is all about. Remember, Trudeau’s jihad against military-style firearms began as a way to deflect attention away from his blackface scandal. He needed something that he could use to redirect the media’s focus so they wouldn’t bring down his entire government.
And it worked.
Now, they’re pretending the black or brownface thing never happened. Instead, it’s a good little progressive by going after those mean, scary-looking guns. The great thing is that he’ll have plenty to show for it, too. He can tout huge numbers of guns taken in as proof he’s making a difference, all without that pesky problem of actually making a difference.
Of course, it’s not like he’d be able to stop the flow of guns anyway. Guns will always find the “low spots” and Canada is a big low spot. Still, the least he could do is at least pretend to be addressing the real issue rather than disarming hundreds of thousands of people who have done absolutely nothing wrong.
