An allegedly armed man who attempted to a rob a jewelry store in Torrance was fatally shot by the store's owner Tuesday, police said. The incident occurred around noon at Leilani’s Jeweler's at 18099 Prairie Ave., near 182nd Street.
The store owner fired on an individual who was trying to rob the store, and the attempted robber died, Torrance Police Department spokesman Sgt. Paul Kranke said.
The man's body was removed from inside the store by coroner's investigators several hours after the shooting.
The business owner said the man had been armed, Kranke said, and a gun believed to be the robbery suspect's was found at the scene.
An ambulance, fire engine and multiple police officers were at the location, video from the scene showed.
A gurney wheeled to the front door of the store was returned to the ambulance empty.
Friends and customers of the owner came to the scene, saying they were concerned for him.
"He's a really nice guy, a nice soft-spoken guy," said friend Garfield Estes. "But, push comes to shove, he'll take care of himself."
A customer said the door needed to be "buzzed" open from the inside for potential buyers to enter.
Investigators were trying to find surveillance video and witnesses. Anyone with information was asked to contact police at 310-618-5570.
