After Citrus Park Mall shooting, Tampa woman gets concealed weapon license :: 11/30/2015

TOWN N’ COUNTRY, FL (WFLA)—A trip to the mall turned into the scare of a lifetime for Heather Barber and her mother on Monday night and now Barber tells News Channel 8 she is not taking any more chances.

“When my mom said, ‘Heather, was that a gunshot? I looked at her and I almost started chuckling. I’m like ‘This is not going to happen right now, there is no way this is going to happen.’ And it did. Thank goodness it wasn’t a mass murder, but it very well could have been. It was someone armed with a gun near Citrus Park Mall,” said Barber.

Barber was forced to hide inside of a coat rack after a man fired a single shot at an employee after lifting a piece of jewelry from a mall kiosk on Monday night.

“If that were to happen again, which hopefully it does not, I need to be prepared and be ready for it. If that person came in with a gun, I need to be prepared to shoot them,” said Barber.

Her mother does have a concealed carry permit and owns a gun and after the scare on Monday, Barber believes it is time to take her own safety into her own hands.

She is headed out on Sunday to get her permit and also to look at guns.

“If that gunman were standing right in front of me, it takes him two seconds to shoot me. So, if I had my conceal and I had my gun in my purse, I would have had two seconds to shoot him,” said Barber.

The permit will be more than a piece of paper for Barber; it’s a piece of paper that brings her peace of mind.
